Four Days Photographing Food Inside & outside a French Château
Imagine spending four days in the French countryside with your camera, photographing beautifully plated dishes in the elegant rooms of a historic château and the grounds.
Natural light streaming through tall windows.
Long wooden tables dressed with seasonal food.
Freshly prepared dishes plated by a professional chef.
No rushing.
No crowded workshops.
Just time to shoot properly, experiment with styling, and create images that elevate your portfolio.
This retreat is designed for photographers who want to step away from their usual environment and create work that simply wouldn’t be possible at home.
By the end of the retreat you’ll leave with a collection of images that feel editorial, refined and ready for your portfolio.
What You’ll Photograph
During the retreat you’ll photograph a range of carefully planned
food setups designed to build a strong, varied portfolio
Elegant Plated Dishes
Beautifully plated dishes prepared by a professional chef, designed to photograph perfectly in natural light. You’ll capture colour, texture and detail in images that feel polished and editorial.
Desserts & Drinks
From delicate desserts to beautifully styled drinks, these setups focus on texture, colour and atmosphere. Perfect for capturing detail shots and creating variety within your portfolio.
Rustic French Table Scenes
Seasonal ingredients styled into relaxed table settings inspired by French countryside dining. Think wooden tables, fresh produce and natural compositions that tell a story.
Outdoor Château Scenes
Take advantage of the château’s gardens and outdoor spaces to photograph food in a truly unique setting. These scenes create images with a sense of place that simply can’t be recreated in a studio.
Introducing: Top chef
JACK
LEACH
Chef Jack Leach will be joining us throughout the retreat, bringing his culinary expertise to both the food we enjoy and the dishes you’ll photograph.
Jack is a UK chef based in the French Alps and in 2024 designed the Marks & Spencer Vegan Christmas Menu, creating a seasonal menu enjoyed by customers across the UK.
Alongside preparing our retreat meals, Jack will style and plate a series of dishes specifically for the photography sessions, designed to look beautiful through the lens.
The result is food that feels elegant, natural and thoughtfully presented, helping you create images that look refined, authentic and portfolio ready.
Hosted by: Emma Dunham

Her retreats are designed to give photographers the time, space and guidance to create work they simply couldn’t produce at home.
Throughout the retreat Emma will guide the sessions, help refine your compositions and lighting, and share the small adjustments that turn a good image into a standout portfolio photograph.
It’s a chance to step away from the noise of everyday work and focus entirely on your photography.

Not a Studio Shoot. A Château Setting.
***
Historic Architecture
The gorgeous château itself becomes part of the scene.
Stone walls, wooden shutters and beautiful aged textures create natural backdrops that frame the food and add character to every photograph.
***
Light & Atmosphere
From soft morning light to warm evening tones, the changing light around the château offers beautiful opportunities to photograph food in a natural setting. Each time of day creates a slightly different mood and feeling to work with.
***
Real Environments
Garden tables, plants and outdoor spaces become part of the composition. Instead of building scenes in a studio, you’ll photograph food in real environments that add depth
and atmosphere.

The Château
Château du Treuil sits in the heart of the French countryside, surrounded by gardens, quiet courtyards and beautiful historic architecture.
For the duration of the retreat the château becomes our creative space, somewhere to slow down, explore new ideas and focus fully on your photography.
You’ll photograph food in elegant rooms filled with natural light, on long outdoor tables beneath the trees, and around the grounds of the château itself.
It’s a setting that naturally inspires creativity and helps create images that feel refined, atmospheric and unique.
A place to step away from everyday life and immerse yourself in photography.

A Typical Day at the Château
A gentle start to the morning.
Perhaps a walk through the grounds, a swim in the pool, or simply sleeping in.
A rustic French breakfast, enjoyed inside the château or outside on the terrace.
A morning photography session using the château, gardens and surrounding spaces as your backdrop.
A relaxed lunch together.
An early afternoon shoot.
Later in the day there may be time to explore the nearby town, enjoy a wine or cognac tasting, or simply soak up the atmosphere.
Then as evening arrives, drinks by the pool before sitting down to a wonderful meal prepared by Jack.
Each day has its own rhythm, but the pace is intentionally relaxed, giving you time to photograph, learn and enjoy the experience.
Where You'll Stay...
Guest rooms are set within the charming Garden Barn and Summer House, just a short stroll across the
courtyard from the main château where we’ll gather for photography sessions and meals.
Tucked around the estate, these beautiful spaces create a relaxed retreat atmosphere while still
giving everyone their own quiet place to unwind.

You can choose a private room or share with another guest, which is a lovely way to enjoy the experience while keeping the cost more manageable.
